Caleb and Lauren Lankford (Mustard Seed Network, Japan)

Caleb and Lauren are church planters in Sapporo, Japan where only 1% of the population identify as Christian. They currently meet every Sunday and are connecting with their community through English connect groups and by immersing themsleves in the culture.

Sapporo, the fifth-largest city in Japan, is the political, cultural, and economic center of the northernmost part of the country of Japan. Built virtually from the ground up in the late 1800s by order of the national government, the city developed with significant American influence on its agricultural economy, academic institutions, and urban planning. Hokkaido, the island and prefecture of which Sapporo is the capital, enjoys considerable brand influence within Japan and supplies much of the country’s agricultural and marine products.

After Japan reopened to international trade and subsequently allowed freedom of religion in the mid-1800s, it was in Sapporo that one of the first clusters of Christian believers formed and one of the first Protestant churches in Japan planted. Yet despite this history, the city and region are home to remarkably few believers in Christ today. For the millions in Japan’s north who have yet to find God, Mustard Seed Network aims to go and plant a new gospel-proclaiming church in the city of Sapporo.
